PIXVAE / Colombian crunch
Hurricane Pixvae returns to shake up our perceptions with a fourth release that lives up to its reputation! The new album « De lado a lado » further deepens the Franco-Colombian combo’s footprint in the ever-exploring territories of neo-traditional music… These musicians have perfect mastery of hybridization and continue to inject explosive substances into the currulao music.
Pixvae’s compact and powerful sound has become a trademark since the phenomenon was born somewhere above the currents of the Pacific… Its music is both rooted in the depths of tradition and vitaminized by the stylistic freedom of the contemporary underground. With « De lado a lado », the band reaches a new level in the intertwining of Afro-Colombian rhythms and noise rock. The formula is even more efficient after two intense years of touring in the original sextet version!
The founding French trio, united for a long time around the detonator Romain Dugelay, has gradually been joined by another trio from the Pacific coast of Colombia, the birthplace of currulao music. Léo Dumont’s augmented drums and Damien Cluzel’s transcendent guitar continue their insatiable communion with the composer’s saxophones and keyboards, accompanied on this album by Juan Carlos Arrechea and Israel Quinones… The former continues his work of transmitting the central instrument of currulao: “la marimba de chonta”. The latter intervenes with percussion and vocals, along with another extraordinary voice, that of Jennifer ‘Xiomora’ Torres. By intensifying its presence in France, the Colombian team has further optimised the fusion aspect of this collective adventure… Pixvae is a gathering on crossroads on the map of an imaginary continent!
The writing of original lyrics allows a contemporary approach of traditional themes of currulao, originally full of the power of everyday life and of the relationship with its natural and spiritual environments. In a post-modern society that dissociates nature and culture or that prioritises profit over fulfilment, this album evokes a claimed otherness and the simple yet complex pleasure of being in the world.ntal collaboration.
