Pixvae / Colombian Crunch

Pixvae continues to evolve in its ongoing quest to strike a balance between the festive essence of currulao, traditional Afro-Colombian music, and the fuses ignited by some of Lyon’s underground heads. The name of this new explosion, “Oì Vé”, sounds like an invitation and resonates from Cali to Lyon.

At the congested crossroads of Africa, the Atlantic and the Pacific, the chief spurgeon is still Romain Dugelay. Since the early days of the trans-continental epic, he has been composing cartographies, combining territories and offering new perspectives. Faithful to the tradition of permanent hybridization in the music of the black meta-continent, he articulates this new repertoire around a focus on the Chonta Marimba, the central instrument of the currulao.

With two long-time accomplices (Léo Dumont, drums & Damien Cluzel, guitar) from the power trio Kouma, Romain Dugelay’s sax and keyboards meet up again with the marimba of Juan Carlos Arrechea, a fundamental encounter during the tour of the 2017 vintage “Kaixu”, and Israel Quinones, who appeared in 2019 on “Cali”. The former is driven to push the rhythmic and sonic capabilities of his instrument into the furthest reaches of jazz and rock. The latter joins forces with cantadora Jennifer “Xiomora” Torres, who also joins the adventure from “Cali”. The Colombian team is at the foot of the melodic work, offering original texts for a modern reinterpretation of the themes

Press

    “A deliciously gritty group sound”

    The wire

“Pixvae have taken […] sturdy foundations and built a roughhouse, jazz-inflected art rock on them, blocking in marimba patterns with fierce guitar, replacing the bodily throb of cununo and bomba with shocked out trap drums.”

    “Album of the week”

    Popmagazine Heaven

“There isn’t a better way to start the day, than with the debut album of Pixvae […] the energy that bursts out of it is irresistible.”
