Saroyé / maloya

Saroyé is the name of the chilli candy who is going to set fire in choosy mouths, wide open for a new transoceanic feast. It is also the name of a hurricane that is going to let crowds full of sweat and pleasure. Finally, it is the name of an expedition that crosses new limits of the black meta-continent… This crew of modern pioneers discovers new horizons, for the unlimited glory of the afro-atlantic musical empire!

Saroyé proposes a new air link between Reunion Island and Cuba: two eyes of a same cyclone for a new look at dance and trance. Enjoying multiple stopovers, the band travels toward the advent of its creolised music. An exciting communion between two musical genres, maloya and rumba, enhanced with flammable additives brought by seven musicians who donate their body and soul to their musical science. African and South-American tones interfere in this rich mixture… These new turbulences complement even more the trip!

At the initiative of Luc Moindranzé Karioudja (Ti’Kaniki, An’Pagay, Parranda La Cruz…), the septet has been created in the boiling Lyon’s musical cooking pot. He is a proud representative of the new maloya scene and carries high the Creole, as his native language but also as a fine art of living crossbreeding. From his Reunion Island, he taps into the unbelievable creativity of his innate ability of mixing cultures, in order to build a bridge towards Caribbean Islands. In his universe, there are just a few dancing steps between Indian and Pacific oceans…

The recipe is everlasting, yet it takes artists with great sensitivities to make the magic happen… Musicians with big hearts who does not care about frontiers and embrace genders to stir the sauce up and make it explode in mouths. In the burning wake of Luc Moindranzé Karioudja, strong personalities had to take the shocks and to fuel the flame! Standing as a great choir, there is an eruptive rhythm section. Nicolas Thé multiplies himself on drums and accessories, opening the way to percussionists Nekaa Champion, Ken Malaise and Théo Pagès who push to the limits their instruments coming from maloya and rumba: textures, materials and vibrations shaped by African legacy. Different patterns evolve within this hypnotic turmoil, thanks to Luc Yengue Yengue’s guitar and Hugo Reydet’s baby bass. They emphasize even more the trans-african touch and harmonize these outstanding new flavours.
